Drive West Today’s 2012 wrap up

22 Dec

DWT had the most prolific year ever in 2012 with 15 concerts, some tours of mainland Australia and Europe and two mini-albums released.

I gotta say that the gig where I played best was the NOW now concert in August, but unfortunately there is no recording … it is slowly flowing out into the stars, mingled with other noise from Sydney at that time.

Some other highlight gigs this year were

the Pontevedra gig in Galicia, Spain, where I met some absolutely lovely people and played to a very attentive crowd

the recent gig in Hobart where I played with Matt Warren in a sort-of impromptu arrangement – the first gig of the Hovering Waitresses.

A concert in May at the Moonah Arts Centre where I worked in some sports commentary from a Carlton Blues game which worked a TREAT!!

I’d like to thank all the people I played with on various tours and whatnot, people who helped gigs happen and people who came and told me they liked my music! Met some rad people and had a blast. Big thanks to the beautiful Nadine Kessler for supporting me and making great tour posters. xxoo

2013 starts with an exciting gig where I will be playing with cartoonist Chris Downes as he draws the images for a ghost/horror story at the Rosny Barn as part of MONA FOMA 2013 … hopefully as an artist at the festival I can sidle up to David Byrne and get someone to take a sneaky pic when I hug him by stealth!!

thanks guys!!!

Here’s an article in Arts Hub which … is slightly fictional in its factual … but reminded me of the video above that I’d forgotten about. It comes from a Sydney performance that I did in 2011 of the ongoing Acousmatic Ecology series … which is a style of playing that I developed over some years.

SHACKLE plays the now NOW

11 Oct

When Nadine and I went to Sydney a few weeks back to play at the now NOW series we met Annie and Robert from Amsterdam – SHACKLE.

Did some quick sketches with my new Brush pens of COLOUR – Annie pointed out that this was orange for the Netherlands! I must have done that subconsciously.

Pontevedra concert – they called me the Santa Tasmano!!

So Nadine and I just got home from a smashing month in Europa – woohoo!! Nadine had some nice adventures at Boisbuchet as part of her Arts Tas grant with the Vitra Fellowship go and check out her stuff as she tells it at her blog Nadine did a lot of type hunting … a lot … and she came up with some nice little numbers (and letters).

I filled my entire sketchbook over the month with sketches and comics, which I’m going to turn into a mini travel-comics zine for a bit of fun.

Pontevedra – Thursday 16th August

Vigo concert – 17th August

2012 Premiers Round – Jarrad Waite (number 30)

3 Aug

I love this dude – he’s so damn athletic and he looks a little like a wolf roving around. He doesn’t really run so much as lope. And he’s such a good mark!!

AND – he’s played for the mighty Blues for 150 games!!!! This week against the mighty Swans at Etihad (where we haven’t had the best bunch of games, it must be said).
For other pics in the series go here
(By the way – just ignore the bits in the picture that say Round 7 and The Saints … I drew this months ago and then found out that he was being rested, then injured … and then he didn’t come back until this round – … so he didn’t reach 150 until this week … I’ll fix it up after I get the score at the end of the game)

Kim Kerze

This is a drawing I did of Kim Kerze while he played with Nigel Farley and Tim Panaretos at a house gig in Hobart on Sunday the 22nd of July, 2012. He also used electronics and other interesting toys on the banjo which created some phenomenally beautiful sounds. Gorgeous gig!
